One of my favorite winter time activities to do involves
eagle watching.
I have done it for years and years.
When I lived in Quincy, IL I would go to the Dam there in
Quincy and watch the eagles in the winter.
I would also see them along the river front with the town
being right on the banks of the Mississippi River.
When I moved to Hannibal, MO I simply moved to the other
side of the river.
That means that I am still right on the banks of the
Mississippi River … just on the Missouri side now.
That is when I discovered the Saverton Dam out Highway 79.
Doug and I have spent many afternoons there watching the
eagles fish in the waters at the dam.
Because of the movement of the water there is always a bit there that is
thawed … even when the rest of the river is frozen over … for the Bald Eagles
to fish in.
There have been years when we counted as many as 50 Bald
Eagles there at a time.
Today we only saw three but they are just as majestic in
small numbers as they are in large numbers.
I forgot to grab the tripod as I ran out the door. It was very windy this afternoon.
Mix the two of those facts together and it
made for some bumpy videos.
The wind was
gusting so hard that lifted the camera … as you can see when you watch. Bear with me.
Next time maybe it won’t be so windy and I will have the tripod.
I will have to check and see how quickly and
to what extent the tripod with swivel because those eagles really book it when
they’re flying low over the river. It
was hard to keep the camera on them. I
realize I could zoom out … and I may next time … but I wanted to see the eagle
as close as I could.
I always enjoy looking at the river ...
Seeing the water ripple ...
Hearing it as it laps against the shore ...
Here is one of the eagles as it sits in a tree ...
Ice!
More ice!
Caught it sitting still and relaxing for a moment!
When
we first got there it was 56 degrees and breezy. That quickly changed. It was surprising how quickly. The wind came up and began to gust to the
point it just about took the camera out of my hands. Then the temperature began to drop.
I took a few shots to show you what the sky was beginning to
look like.
Yikes!
I
finally got cold and tired from fighting the wind and went on to the car and
waited for the guys to come back to the car.
It was a good trip and a good day.
It didn’t take me very long to get warmed back up and rested. We got
home just before the heavy wind and gusting began.
Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today!
Come back often!
And please remember to be kind to those around you.
Enjoy this day in your life.
Even the bad ones lead to good ones.
I am so glad you stopped by!
